ACE graduates represent a talented and passionate group of individuals who have continued to advance in their fields of expertise and develop skills in a variety of disciplines. More and more often we hear of ACE grads that have been recognized for their achievements, and we wanted to find a place in this newsletter to honor those who have received awards.

Dr. Mike Faggella-Luby (ACE 5) graduated from the University of Kansas Department of Special Education and was recently honored for the work he did on his dissertation. His final research focused on the effects of using the Embedded Story Structure (ESS) Routine with 79 ninth graders in a literature course.  These students attended Bishop Kenny HS, Faggella-Luby’s ACE school, and were predetermined to be at-risk for failure.  They were invited to a summer school program that involved the ESS Routine.  Because of his significant results and interesting research, the Council for Learning Disabilities awarded Faggella-Luby with the Outstanding Researcher Award for 2006.

Mike served as an administrator for two years at Bishop Kenny High School, after his ACE commitment in Jacksonville, before he began his work at the University of Kansas.  Faggella-Luby studied at the Center for Research on Learning and focused on adolescent literacy and instructional design for individuals with learning disabilities and students at-risk for failure.  Congratulations to Mike for his success and focused dedication to the advancement of education!

If you know of any other ACE graduates who are being honored for their work, please contact the ACE Fellowship at ace.fellowship@nd.edu.  We heard about Mike’s award from his friend and roommate and we are looking forward to hearing more success stories in the future. Keep ‘em coming!
